Farmer Kim and The Feathery Ladies Continues!

It has been a while since I last worked on my 18x24 inch fabric book titled, Farmer Kim and The Feathery Ladies. It will be 15 pages total and now I have 12 complete. I look forward to binding the pages together and presenting the book to the people. :)

Harvesting for Sunday Market

Yesterday I did the market for Wormfarm at Thunder Valley Inn in the Dells.

It was a rainy day but the veggies looked beautiful.

The day before the market I harvested what I would need.  Here is some kale and chard about to soak in cold water.  It cleans the veggies of dirt and bugs but also gets them cold so they do not wilt in the fridge.

Peppers!

Took a break to enjoy a pear.

Honeycrisp apples.

Eggplant.

Harvesting carrots is a lot of fun.  First I fork nearby the carrots to loosen the soil.

Then I pull them out easy.  It feels so good to pull these tasty orange guys out of the soil and here them pop as they come out.

Romano beans!

Yesterday was another useful experience learning to harvest for market and set up a stand.

Sewing a Miniature Me and Harvesting Chamomile!

I am almost near being finished with the first page of my book!  It has been a ton of fun working with my massive collection of fabric scraps.

Irises! So beautiful.

The Chamomile was not welcome in the hoop house so I harvested the flowers and tore out the plant.

I am drying the flowers to make Chamomile Tea and Chamomile muffins!

We planted a whole bunch of peppers the other day.  We laid drip tape (irrigation) down the middle, then black plastic mulch on top to heat the soil for the peppers (they like it hot) and to cut down on the weeds.  We put cages on them so that they will grow upright.  18 inches apart, staggered, 2 rows.  Mmm mmm peppers!

The babes!  They have little feathers on their wings now.

And....the rooster.  I only post this image because so many wonder what he looks like.  He is a jerk and doesn't deserve to be named.

Last day in New York

Yesterday was our last day in New York.  We came home this early morning.  We stopped by Dun-Well Doughnuts one last time.

Then we visited Central Park for three hours.  We love it there!

A beautiful day!

Later that night we went to the opening reception for The Society of Illustrators Student Show.  Jacob's piece was accepted into the show.  Check out Jacob's blog here, he is super talented.

I am going to miss this boy.  Tomorrow morning I leave for Wisconsin for my artist residency at Wormfarm Institute.  I am nervous because I have never been far from home and on my own, but I am excited to grow as an artist and farmer.  I have so many ideas and I can't wait to get started.

Finished!

Monsanto and the Farmer is finally finished!

In the end, the corn is hardly visible because it is being crushed by Monsanto. It is sad that so much of my work is not seen, but at the same time it reminds me of the work the farmers do that is not appreciated.

Monsanto owns the corn and the farmers are it's minions. Monsanto can destroy the farmer. I wanted Monsanto to be crushing many varieties of heirloom corn because they insist on only growing one kind of corn, and this corn can mix with the heirloom seeds and we can loose them for good. Mexico is especially proud of it's many varieties of corn, but Monsanto has succeeded in growing it's one variety of corn there as well.

The farmer offers the one kind of genetically modified corn Monsanto has them grow.

Farmer's Hand Complete!

I finished the farmer's hand this morning. Now I will start making the corn out of fabric...it should be really fun!

I am going to buy the Monsanto hand his suit and the farmer's hand his flannel from the thrift store today. :O )

It will be interesting to see how this clay dries. It will more than likely crack but I think that will be fitting. I've only used this clay for the tomatoes and it worked really well for them, but they were small and easy to carve out the insides so they'd dry faster and without cracking.

The fingers were planning on sagging so I cut the armature from the clay monsanto hand I'd built in the summer and stuck the wires into the palm.

This is the end result. The holes in the arm will be to tie the hand down to the board with wire, I also added two holes in the palm since the corn will cover it. This picture is kinda creepy...

I'm excited for this piece! All the hard parts are done. Smooth sailing from here on out.
