Craft Your Heart Out 4!

Craft night is going strong. I hosted my 4th one yesterday. I shared delicata squash, cider, cinnamon sugar apples, and pumpkin cookies with everyone while we crafted and conversed. It was wonderful!

Thiel, Kim, Annie, Naomi and Hope!

Hope made a chicken!

Kim made hand puppets!

Sarah and Desmond made art with tape, markers and chickens!

I finally made a chicken card for the first time in 6 weeks after being to busy with the show at Delicious.

Portland, Oregon

-Gossip

I visited Portland, Oregon for 2 weeks. It was my first trip all on my own and it turned out to be more amazing than I had ever anticipated. I grew so much in 2 weeks.

-Spoon

I took Amtrak to Portland from Chicago because I hadn't been past Iowa and really wanted to see the landscape along the way. I was not disappointed!

LETS GO Chicago Harvest

Last Wednesday I joined LETS GO Chicago in harvesting vegetables for their CSA in Rogers Park. It was a lovely day.

They had a bunch of gigantic sunflowers in the garden that they had not intentionally planted but that had volunteered.

I harvested cherry tomatoes. It's not summer if I don't harvest some tomatoes! I love the smell, and the green hands that come with it.

A cosmo.

And this is Little Love. She is very...um...unique...but she really is a darling just like her name implies.

Turkey the Chicken

Here is what I wrote for this weeks CSA newsletter.

Turkey the Chicken

As soon as I arrived at the Wormfarm I was confused about my existence.  Farmer Kim said my name was to be Turkey but I was almost positive I was a chicken.  It was a cold, rainy May day when I was placed in my new coop.  I was to stay in the small area dedicated to the baby chicks with heat lamps, food and water.  But I was no longer a chick.  I was 1 month old and a giant compared to the others.  So I made sure to stomp on the babies’ heads as much as possible to put them in their place.

After my first few weeks at the Wormfarm, Kim picked me up against my will and took me outside for the very first time.  I was “a big girl now,” Kim said.  I was amazed by the wonder of the world around me.  The tall greens that surrounded me were edible and tasty and there were tiny bugs for me to search and devour with a gulp.  I would watch the older chickens with amazement, exploring so far from the coop that they looked like specks in the distance.  I could go wherever I chose.

As I got older my legs turned a deep golden yellow and little white feathers were growing on them.  I now had black feathers around my neck and the ones that were white started to change to blonde.  My black tail feathers shimmered green in the sunlight.  My ruby comb was growing.  I was a beautiful Brahma according to Kim.  She called me, “Turkey Girl.”

I recently turned 6 months old.  I was perched on a tree stump when Kim was walking by.  I suddenly had the urge to crow for the first time.  I wanted to crow like the older rooster but my voice cracked and it was an awkward, screechy “cock-a-doodle-doo.”  Kim stopped cold in her tracks.  She turned and looked me in the eyes and said “Turkey Girl…You’re a Turkey Boy?”

Page 5 Complete!

Page 5 of my 18 x 24 inch fabric book titled Farmer Kim and The Feathery Ladies is complete!

The little ones!  I see them huddled like this all the time so I had to add them in.

Progress shot.  I cut the fabric out and placed them around before I sewed them.

Embroidering the words.  It's funny, I didn't know that I had been embroidering.  My Gram gave me these hoops and they have made embroidering much easier!

Jake sent me this drawing in the mail!  Dino is thinking "Yup, that's about right...."

Meet Turkey!

Turkey is a bit older than a month. She is a lovely chicken!

She will grow into a Heneral Lee. Big and mighty.

Heneral Lee.

Turkey the chicken in motion!

She is a Brahma chicken. They have feathers on their feet.

She follows me around and is very excited to see me.

Sweet little Turkey.
