Chickens on Display at Delicious!

Life has been very eventful since I got back from Portland, Oregon. Right when I got home I had only a week to make art for a solo show at Delicious (3827 N. Lincoln Ave.), a vegetarian/vegan coffee shop in Chicago. For this show titled, Chicken Thoughts, I was interested in transforming my chicken cards into something much larger with more possibilities and it was really fun to do so.

The work will be up till the end of September. The art is on sale ranging from $10-$45. Send me an email if you are interested in a piece. kimguare@yahoo.com

LETS GO Chicago Harvest

Last Wednesday I joined LETS GO Chicago in harvesting vegetables for their CSA in Rogers Park. It was a lovely day.

They had a bunch of gigantic sunflowers in the garden that they had not intentionally planted but that had volunteered.

I harvested cherry tomatoes. It's not summer if I don't harvest some tomatoes! I love the smell, and the green hands that come with it.

A cosmo.

And this is Little Love. She is very...um...unique...but she really is a darling just like her name implies.

Saying Goodbye to Rogers Park One Day at a Time

I have been living in Rogers Park for almost 4 years now.  In May I will be moving to Reedsburg, Wisconsin to be the Residency Manager at The Wormfarm Institute until the end of October.  Jacob will be moving to New York in May to pursue his Illustration career.  A long distance relationship will not be easy but I know we are doing the right thing.

Lake Michigan is 4 blocks from my apartment.  It is one of the many perks of living in Rogers Park.  I have always been interested in the rocks at the lake for their many shapes and earthy colors.  Gradually, I have accumulated a large collection.  But now that I am moving, I am trying to get rid of as many things as possible.  I have made many paintings inspired by my collection.  Their colors have greatly influenced my choice of colors in my work.  I have done so much with them that I no longer need them.  It only felt right to give them back to the lake.

The 4 year collection.  I have spent many hours sifting through the sand finding rocks that seemed different from the rest.

I have tried to make many painting to describe the beauty of their colors and shapes and none of the painting have ever seemed good enough.  Using the actual rocks instead of trying to paint them has finally become what I have been trying to do for years.

Women's History Month!

My artwork will be on display at the Wrightwood Ashburn Chicago Public Library in March for Women's History Month.  The Chicago Public Library has chosen many different female artists to display their work throughout the Chicago Public libraries for the month of March.  I am very excited to be a part of this!

I will be giving an artist talk at the library on Monday, March 11 from 6pm to 7:30pm.

The address is 8530 S. Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, IL 60652.

Here is a new piece I made for the library exhibition titled Ovum.  It is 14 x 14 inches and made of felt and yarn.

Farming at Iron Street Farm in Bridgeport!

Iron Street Farm is in Chicago!  I am happy to have a found a farm nearby me to work on.  It is a 7 acre, urban farm located in Bridgeport.  My friend, Matt and I transplanted fennel into the ground and moved a mixture of beer mash and wood chips.  The beer mash and wood chips had been surrounding the hoop houses from the outside to keep them insulated but now that the weather is getting warmer they no longer need the extra heat.

We shoveled beer mash and wood chips into the wheel barrow, then brought them over to a huge pile and dumped them out.  Compost bins are in the background!

It was a great day!  I got my first sunburn of the year.  I always make that mistake once and then I learn to have sunscreen on at all times.

If you ever want to volunteer with me on a farm this summer let me know!
